‘From afar’ new CD Signum Quartett

Inner unrest, confrontation with death and a longing after a far-away, peaceful idyll represent the central motives of this special programme of the latest CD by the Signum Quartett.

You may get an impression here

Recently the quartet were present during the first String Quartet Biennale in Amsterdam and they will be back at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam next season.

More information about the CD:
Aus der Ferne illuminates the Romanticism and lyricism of this great master. By combining string quartets with lieder arranged for string quartet, the members of the Signum Quartett aim to show how Schubert’s instrumental and vocal music cross-pollinate each other. The fact that Schubert quotes openly from his own songs in his chamber music underlines the strong connection between the two, and this album takes this connection a step further. The concept for the album grew out of the Schubertiad, where chamber music and vocal works would be heard side by side in an intimate setting. A further idea was to complement one of the late quartets with an earlier one – perhaps lesser-known but not a lesser piece. The B-flat major quartet and the Rosamunde Quartet, both featured on this album, share a delicacy and fragility of spirit; convey a longing from afar. These instrumental works gain significance by being accompanied by the lieder arrangements, created by quartet member Xandi van Dijk. These arrangements present quintessential Schubert lieder such as Du bist die Ruh, Wandrers Nachtlied and Lachen und Weinen in a new, fascinating light.

Doric’s Wigmore performance with Haydn opus 64

The Doric String Quartet has recently released a new CD Haydn’s opus 64 and performed the 2nd instalment of the Opus 64 cycle 2 weeks ago in Wigmore Hall. Here’s an excerpt from the Sunday Times:

Sunday Times, Sunday March 11, 2018
Paul Driver

“When, on my next visit to the hall, the Dorics sat conventionally on the same small platform and, with affable refinement, embarked on their succinct Haydn programme, I was freshly struck by the satisfying effect of the time-honoured arrangement. Everything signified and was right. The playing was not much less virtuosic than previously, but discreetly so — flamboyant when called for, but not otherwise; vibrato sparing but beautiful; ensemble impeccable — a true togetherness. Donat’s observations, for instance, on Haydn’s intriguing use of double reprises in the recapitulation sections of his Op 64 first movements could be borne out by the ear, and profitably, when there were no distractions for the eye. One marvellous utterance followed another.”

‘Dissonance’ with Quartetto di Cremona

The Italian Quartetto di Cremona, recently performing during the very first and successful edition of the String Quartet Biennale in Amsterdam, gave a concert in the Sala Verdi in Milaan, playing Mozart’s Dissonance Quartet. Here you can listen to the first movement.

During their visit to Amsterdam for the String Quartet Biennale they were invited on the Dutch TV show Podium Witteman, talking about their special Stradivarius instruments, which they recently started playing on. On the show they played the first movement from Verdi’s string quartet:

Renée Fleming and The Emerson String Quartet join forces

Renée Fleming and the Emerson String Quartet Capture Vienna’s Golden Age on new recording of works by Berg and Wellesz  on september 11, 2015

August 13, 2015 (New York, NY) – Soprano Renée Fleming and the Emerson String Quartet join forces for a new recording of Berg’s intricately complex Lyric Suite and Egon Wellesz’s highly expressive setting of Sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett-Browning, released on Decca on September 11, 2015. It is the first collaboration on record of America’s reigning star soprano and its premier string quartet.

Fleming and the Emerson String Quartet join together for a special performance of this repertoire at SubCulture in New York City on September 16, 2015 at 7:30pm in celebration of the album release.

In addition to their performance, excerpts will be screened from an upcoming documentary by Hilan Warshaw, Lyric Suite: A Musical Love Story. The film captures the process of ESQ and Fleming rehearsing and recording the Lyric Suite and also includes cinematic re-enactments of the “secret program” inspired by Berg’s haunting masterwork. It will be broadcast on the Austrian network ORF.

The Lyric Suite is an enigmatic work, which is believed to reflect a secret program relating to Berg’s affair with novelist Franz Werfel’s sister. In the sixth and final movement Berg introduces the soprano voice and quotes Wagner’s Tristan motif to evoke his doomed, impossible love. It was, said the musicologist Theodor Adorno, a “latent opera.”

The five short pieces that comprise Egon Wellesz’s Sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett-Browning were among the last works he completed before leaving Austria ahead of the “Anschluss” in 1938. On this recording they are heard in the original version for soprano and string quartet. The release also includes Erich Zeisl’s Komm, süßer Tod, a song suggesting the acceptance of death, arranged for soprano and string quartet by J. Peter Koene.

The Emerson String Quartet has accumulated an unparalleled list of achievements over three decades: more than thirty acclaimed recordings, nine Grammys® (including two for Best Classical Album), three Gramophone Awards, the Avery Fisher Prize, Musical America’s “Ensemble of the Year” and collaborations with many of the greatest artists of our time. The arrival of cellist Paul Watkins in 2013 has had a profound effect on the Emerson Quartet, and the reconfigured group has been greeted with impressive accolades.  In a season of over 85 quartet performances, the Emerson plays extensively throughout North America during 2015-16. In addition to multiple tours of Europe, they visit Moscow, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul. The Emerson continues its series at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC for its 36th season, and is presented by Lincoln Center’s “Great Performers” in a three-part series of late Haydn and early Beethoven string quartets in April and May.

This modernist Viennese repertoire is perfect for Renée Fleming, who is famed for what the Evening Standard called her “intense and luxurious” performances of Richard Strauss and Korngold, Berg and Mahler. When she gave a fin de siècle recital at the Barbican in 2012, Edward Seckerson wrote: “We were back in Vienna’s golden age and it seemed like that was where she had always belonged.”

Renée Fleming’s recent commitments and honours included opening in a new production of The Merry Widow at the Metropolitan Opera, performing for Prince William and Kate, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, during their visit to New York, receiving Germany’s Cross of the Order of Merit, performing in the world premiere of Joe DiPietro’s Living on Love then making her Broadway debut in the same work. This fall she will sing in a special gala concert at the Los Angeles Music Center on September 25th to celebrate the life and legacy of Luciano Pavarotti.

New CD Signum Quartett: ‘soundescapes’

The new CD soundescapes’ from the Signum Quartett, with works by Ravel, Debussy and Thomas Adès has received top reviews in the international press.
Flawless, extremely musical, at times captivating and even racy.” 5*

ark: “Album Check I: soundescapes”. In: Aachener Zeitung, 10. April 2015.

Thomas Adès about his work ‘Aracadiana’ on the CD ‘soundescapes’:
“I am most excited by this new recording by the Signum quartet of my first quartet Arcadiana. It is a thrill to have this magnificent recording, and to find my piece in the perfect context of the two great masterpieces by Debussy and Ravel. It is an honour for a composer of my generation to be presented in such company. Bravo and many thanks to the Signum Quartet!”

Musical escape
“[…] the Signum Quartet, who under the allusion-rich title “soundescapes” has just released an extraordinary recording of sensual works which play with the flow of sound and colour. These are musical points of escape in many respects, as this recording is potentially addictive.”
Tatjana Mehner: “Musikalische Fluchtpunkte” In: Ostthüringer Zeitung, 7. April 2015.

“Fresh and exciting”
The new CD of the German Signum Quartet belongs belongs in the premium class. This recording of Debussy’s String Quartet is characterized from the very first bar by an elastic and flowing style and an enormously rich tonal palette. The four players approach this impressionistic gem with a joyful sense of discovery, fresh and full of vigour.

“Taufrisch und aufgregend” In:, 27.March 2015.

Some quotes from several different reviews
der Spiegel April 19 2015.

“An exhilarating cocktail.”
“How wonderful it is when interpreters bring these ideas to life with such verve and intuition. […] An enthusiasm for playing which will perk up even hardened chamber music-grouches.”
“a refined fire, glowing, perfectly formed.”

MDR Figaro from April 20 2015
“With this project the Signum Quartet again stands for an overwhelming joy of playing, precision, a keen sense of rhythm, and not least for a sense for colours and nuances. These readings meaningfully unify exacting analysis, earnestness and intoxicating moments.
Concerti online
“The resulting sound is concentrated, shimmering, ethereal, at the same time crystal clear and yes, also beguiling.”

Deutschland Rundfunk from May 3rd 2015
door Maja Ellmenreich: “Die neue Platte: Musik zum Anfassen”
“Music to touch”

“Music to touch, music which does not merely ring in the ears but which is positively palpable. This is the new CD by the Signum Quartet. At times it feels like gossamer parchment paper, at times like coarse, dried wood, at times like brushed, cold steel.”

“the Signum Quartet invites us on a racy whitewater voyage with their technically precise and musically flexible playing.”

“The four string players of the Signum Quartet take us on a journey through soundscapes – craggy and sweet, sparse and lush. This is music not only for hearing and feeling – with a little fantasy it is also music for seeing.”

Pizzicato Magazine, by Remy Franck, May 4 2015

“To play like this, to narrate like this, there needs to be a deep emotional connection to the musical text on the side of the performer, but also a mental preparation which clarifies the complexity of the demands and elucidates the course of events from start to finish.”

“This music has a phenomenally gifted narrator in the Signum Quartet, who understand how to emotionally convey the tangible aspects of Adès’s thought in its musically abstracted form and in so doing present the attentive, absorbed listener with a range of suggestively helpful interpretations.”

“Introspection and refined emotional nuances also define this reading of the Ravel quartet, in which we, as in the preceding works, marvel at the ensemble’s balance of sound, which transforms the music into a kind of sensual dream and portrays the delicacy of Ravel’s music completely.”

Janácěk/Martinů: String Quartets, review: ‘passionate spontaneity’ van het Doric String Quartet

The British Doric String Quartet recently released a new CD with the 2 string quartets by Jacacek and one by Martinu.
‘The Doric brings to bear a kaleidescope of emotions in a vivid, trenchant and intuitively heartfelt performance’, Geoffrey Norris writes. Read the whole ariticle in the British Telegraph

Amstel Quartet 4 * in dutch news paper Volkskrant

Amstel Quartet – TON SUR TON ****

CD news

This fall starts with a number of new CD releases from several string quarets:
– the New York based Brentano String Quartet releases opus 130 and the Grosse Fuge opus 133 with the  label Aeon, after succesfull CD’s with Beethoven’s opus 125, 127, 132 and 135. In the season 15-16 the quartet will be  available from November 1 untill 15 2015 with these programmes.

– in December South American Cuarteto Latinoamericano releases its latest CD, with works from the forgotten but fantastic Spanish composer Ruperto Chapí.

The CD will be released with the label Brilliant Classics and will be presenterd on October 5th live from the Spiegelzaal in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, which is also live on Dutch radio 4. The quartet is available for bookings with and without Klára Würtz with these programmes.

During the ICMA (international classical music awards) 2014 they were awarded with a prize for their CD ‘no. 3’, for their recording with work by Berg, Bartók and Schnittke. According to the jury: Three Quartets n. 3 by the 20th-century composers Bartok, Berg and Schnittke show completely different styles, ranging from late romanticism to folk inspired rhythms and apocalyptic eclecticism. The Signum Quartet finds the right concept for each of these works and their performances combine enthusiasm with unfussy and transparent playing.’

This fall their 5th CD with the label Capriccio sees the light with works by Debussy, Ravel and Thomas Adès (Arcandiana, 1998).
The quartet is available in different periods. Here you can find their programmes for the season 15-16.
